Live Storytelling Events Calendar

Live storytelling events can be very entertaining and also very powerful. They allow us to connect with people in our community and collectively feel the same emotions. It’s a unique experience whether you’re telling your story or listening, so you won’t want to miss these live storytelling events around the United States this year.  

Storytelling Live! 2019
Jonesborough, Tennessee | Multiple Dates

From May through October, Storytelling Live! brings a different storyteller to Jonesborough Tennessee each week. With these Teller in Residence events at the International Storytelling Center, guests can listen to these matinee performances at 2pm daily from Tuesday through Saturday. There are also special events during the season, including workshops, evening concerts, Saturday morning children’s shows and holiday concerts. See the full schedule here.   

The Moth Live Events
Nationwide | Multiple Dates

The Moth hosts live storytelling events in cities all over the United States. Their curated Main Stage Events feature five storytellers who develop and shape their stories with The Moth directors. However, there are other events such as StorySLAMs that are open to anyone. During this open mic storytelling competition, participants can share a five-minute story on the night’s theme. Storytellers Project
Nationwide | Multiple Dates

The Storytellers Project is a nationwide series of live storytelling events hosted by journalists from USA Today Network newsrooms. Anyone can step on stage and share a true, first-person story with their neighbors. This platform for oral storytelling aims to entertain and foster a stronger sense of community. The series has more than 100 events in 2019 alone and audience sizes range from 75 to 1,100 people. Search for events in your city by visiting their website.

National Storytelling Festival
Jonesborough, Tennessee | October 4 – 9

The 47th annual National Storytelling Festival will be hosted by the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, Tennessee October 4 – 9, 2019. Enjoy live stories from the featured tellers, participate in storytelling workshops and tell your own stories at the Swappin’ Grounds. Voices — Veterans Storytelling Project
Costa Mesa, California | October 5

On October 5 at Heroes Hall in Costa Mesa, California, veterans will be sharing their most memorable military experiences. This compelling night of storytelling will feature raw, unfiltered stories that are sure to bring both tears and laughter. The event is free to attend, so click here to register.

Ojai Storytelling Festival
Ojai, California | October 24 – 27

Listen to some of the best storytellers in the United States at the 19th Annual Ojai Storytelling Festival October 24 – 27, 2019. There will also be workshops where you’ll learn about storytelling as it relates to marketing, how to craft your family story, and quick ways to cut to the chase and deliver fresh, impactful stories. Speak Easy Live Storytelling
Columbus, Ohio | First Thursday of Every Month

Join Speak Easy at Wild Goose Creative for an open mic storytelling event on the first Thursday of every month. This entertaining event features true stories told live and each month has a different theme. The event is $5 at the door and the first 10 tellers to sign up get to share their 5 – 7 minute story with the crowd. Come listen, or come tell!

Stories to Scenes
Roslindale, Massachusetts | Third Saturday of Every Month

Performed at The Rozzie Square Theater in Roslindale, Massachusetts, Stories to Scenes is a collaboration between Massmouth and Riot Improv. Massmouth is an organization that promotes the timeless art of storytelling through live events and education, so think hilarious improv comedy with a narrative twist. These scenes are inspired by real-life stories of love, humor and tragedy performed live by Massmouth storytellers. Learn more about this recurring event here.
